Don’t miss visiting the large statue of a sailor kissing a nurse located in the small park area next to the ship. Located at the north end of the Coronado peninsula, the North Island Naval Air Station is recognized as the “Birthplace of Naval Aviation” and was first commissioned in 1917. Among its notable achievements, the Naval Air Station is where the navy’s first aviator, Lieutenant Ellyson, was trained. Today, its airfield is home to over 230 stationed aircraft and its quay wall is home-port to two aircraft carriers, the USS Carl Vinson and the USS Theodore Roosevelt.

The Big Bay is always full of activity and there is never a shortage of boat tours. We did the two-hour tour on the Hornblower Cruises since this was the best value. For unique boutiques and eclectic shops, including San Diego’s most famous hat store, head to the uptown neighborhood of Hillcrest.

And if you like to enjoy luxurious dinner cruises that give you the feel of royalty, the Coronado Ferry Landing company can give you the unforgettable dinner cruise of your dreams. South of the bridge was sort of like an outdoor museum of the US Navy’s ships, submarines and dry-dock facilities. Some of these ships were massive and some of them have recently returned from months of deployment. These boats, designed originally for military patrols, are smaller and may have a bumpier ride than larger boats. Here’s your chance to drive a 13′ mini speedboat as part of a narrated group San Diego bay tour.

Here, you'll find souvenir shops and a beautiful park where you can sit and admire the beautiful view of the water. There is ample off-street parking available, with shuttles that will take you to the cruise terminal, as well as easy access via taxi or public transportation from the airport or downtown area. Founded in 1903, the Scripps Institute of Oceanography is one of the oldest and largest centers for ocean and Earth science research training in the world, with both undergraduate and graduate levels.

Coastal

It’s an amazing way to admire all the beautiful and historically important sights. Make sure to check out the most popular and well-rated San Diego Harbor cruise. Brunch cruises and champagne cruises are a must-do for any hedonist out there who likes to enjoy life to the fullest.

I recommend you take advantage of photo opportunities during stops along your route for the perfect Instagram shot. You’ll find many different options, there are offerings for adrenaline junkies, history buffs as well as hedonists who like to feel the ultimate comfort. On the South route, you'll cruise past the USS Midway Aircraft Carrier, Naval Amphibious Base, Tuna Town and the Coronado Bay Bridge. It’s not often a little boy gets to see all these “cool and awesome” ships.

The bridge has a vertical clearance of about 200 feet (61 m) allowing enough room for the tall ships to pass underneath it. Past the airport is Shelter Island which is a man-made island that houses many marinas and Polynesian themed restaurants and outdoor summer concerts. This was created over 50 years ago using dredged up sand from the bay to make room for the big military ships. They can accommodate individuals, groups, and charters of up to 24 people. Book in advance, as this is certainly one of the unique San Diego bay tours. The Maritime Museum of San Diego maintains replica ships for unique San Diego Bay tours.

Home to a yacht club and various pieces of renowned public art, Shelter Island is one of the best sights to see in the San Diego Harbor. Embark on this luxurious 40-foot (12 m) sailing yacht and be treated to the view of the city’s skyline from the bay. The USS Midway is an old naval aircraft carrier turned museum that is permanently docked in the harbor of San Diego. Learn about the area’s naval history and tour the control room, the sailors’ bunks, and the deck where fighter jets used to land on the ship.

Admire the engineering masterpiece of the Panama Canal, the water channel that connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Do you want to celebrate this special sunset surrounded by your loved ones or colleagues, have an intimate gathering or an extravagant affair? San Diego Bay Cruises guarantees that you'll find the perfect yacht for it. A beautiful seaside community, Point Loma is not only a delightful sight to see while cruising in the San Diego Harbor, it holds a special place in the history of California.

This activity will only take about 2 hours, but since the hotel pickup and drop off from the San Diego area isn’t provided, it will probably take longer time out of your day. The 2-hour one gives you a full itinerary, while with the 1-hour cruise, you get to choose between seeing the North Harbor or the South Harbor. For those interested in a shorter option, the La Jolla Shores 5K offers a mostly downhill course and features some of the most scenic views of the last 3.1 miles of the half marathon course. It was amazing to think what some of these ships were capable of performing. Our narrator was a former Navy personnel so he gave us a very detailed narration of each ship we passed which was informative but now all lost on me.

The La Jolla Half Marathon is one of America's most picturesque and beautiful point-to-point races. Starting at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, the course follows a scenic coastal route before reaching the challenging climb to the summit of Torrey Pines State Park. The course then rolls atop Torrey Pines mesa, continues down through residential La Jolla Shores, and finishes at La Jolla Cove. The spirit, sounds and flavors of southwest Louisiana come alive at the largest and most-authentic Louisiana-themed music and food festival this side of the bayou.

Of course, an expert marine guide will be there to tell you all the interesting details about these cool animals. We did a quick turn-around back to the downtown area and passed more of the city’s landmarks. One of the newest attractions, which we have yet to visit, is the San Diego Central Library. This modern, $185 million, nine-story high building with its imposing dome stood out in the city skyline. We’ve driven on this $50 million bridge countless times but this was our first time sailing underneath it.
